A Place to Bury Strangers are the loudest band in New York -- and maybe the entire country? photo 1

A Place to Bury Strangers is affectionately known as “the loudest band in New York”, at least that’s what the fans say. They’ve also dealt with early closures of their live performances thanks to the NYPD. While that may sound silly and pretentious it also makes perfect sense. Singer/guitarist/noise sculptor Oliver Ackerman has been building fuzz boxes and noise gadgets under the name Death By Audio for years. He’s created and/or modified guitar pedals for bands like Wilco and Serena Maneesh. Pedal geeks might want to put him in their “favorites” tab.

Going back a few years I was a big fan of Ackerman's old troupe Skywave. They released a gem of an album in 2003 entitled Synthstatic (Alison Records), a record definitely worth finding for fans of The Jesus and Mary Chain. The trio split, Oliver continued his pedal business, and the other guys went on to form Ceremony. A few years later a grip of links started to appear on the shoegaze.co.uk forum board about some white noise sounding trio called A Place To Bury Strangers. Surprise! The band gets an enthusiastic album review from Pitchfork and you can guess what happens next.

The band has been touring to sold out audiences since last Fall and will be playing a few SXSW day parties in March during their stay in Austin (Pitchfork at Emo’s and Little Radio/Noise Pop at Red Eyed Flys) .

Quotes you’re likely to hear from venue owners:

“Get the f*** out of here!”
“I am going to kill you.”
“I've only had to wear earplugs twice in my entire life and both times were tonight.”
